Sankat Mochan Temple Varanasi – A Center of Devotion and Peace
The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is one of Varanasi’s most respected and spiritually powerful shrines, dedicated to Lord Hanuman — the divine symbol of strength, unwavering devotion, and the remover of all obstacles.
The name “Sankat Mochan” itself means “one who frees from difficulties,” and devotees believe that prayers offered here help remove hardships and bring peace, protection, and prosperity.
Founded in the early 16th century by the revered saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ramcharitmanas and Hanuman Chalisa, the temple carries deep historical significance. According to popular belief, Tulsidas had a divine vision of Lord Hanuman at this very spot, inspiring him to establish this sacred temple. This makes the temple especially important for followers of both Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman.
Inside the sanctum, the idol of Hanuman is beautifully decorated with sindoor (vermilion) and marigold garlands, following age-old traditions. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered highly auspicious, drawing large numbers of devotees who come to chant the Hanuman Chalisa and offer flowers, sweets, and oil lamps. During Hanuman Jayanti, the temple witnesses a massive influx of pilgrims from across the country.
Beyond its spiritual value, the temple also holds an important cultural place in Varanasi. It hosts the renowned Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, an annual classical music and dance festival that draws celebrated artists and performers. This beautiful combination of devotion and classical art enhances the temple’s identity as both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural treasure of the city.
Located near the Assi area and surrounded by a serene atmosphere, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple remains a must-visit destination for pilgrims and seekers wishing to experience divine blessings, inner peace, and relief from life’s challenges.
